Yes, you can set up a UAE free zone company remotely as far as the licence at several free zones: IFZA says the application process for remote company formation is "100% digital", RAKEZ says there is no need for physical visits, Meydan Free Zone issues its licence digitally, and DMCC checks your identity by video call and has the company documents e-signed through DocuSign. What still needs you in the UAE is the residence visa, because the medical fitness test and the Emirates ID fingerprints are done in person, and in practice the bank, where RAKEZ's bank account page describes a visit to sign once the account is approved. (Sources: IFZA; RAKEZ; Meydan Free Zone; DMCC Company Formation Application Guideline; UAE Government portal; ICP; RAKEZ bank account service)

As of October 2026, the order that works from abroad is: choose your free zone, apply and sign online, receive the licence, then travel to the UAE for the residence visa and the bank meeting, planned as one trip where you can. The UAE company formation timeline covers how long each phase takes; this guide covers where you need to be for each step.

What You Can Finish From Abroad

The licence stage is the part of a free zone setup you can finish from abroad. IFZA, DMCC, Meydan Free Zone and RAKEZ each publish a remote route, and each sets its own rules for how you apply, prove your identity and sign, summarised below in each authority's own terms.

Remote Licence Routes at Four Free Zones

Free zone

How you apply

What you send, sign or receive

What it says about visiting

IFZA

An application process for remote company formation that IFZA calls "100% digital"

A passport copy, a digital passport photo and IFZA's application form with UBO information, plus an Emirates ID and visa copy only if you are a UAE resident; IFZA says certain free zones accept e-signatures for all formation documents, including the Memorandum of Association

Says you "don't have to be physically present to submit company setup documents"

DMCC

Through an assigned Business Setup Executive, with only copies of documents needed at pre-approval

Identity checked by video call against your passport; the articles of association and specimen signature forms e-signed through DocuSign

DMCC also runs an in-person Client Registration Centre at Almas Tower, JLT, but its guideline's identity check and signing run by video call and DocuSign

Meydan Free Zone

Online incorporation through its remote setup process

A licence issued digitally, in under 60 minutes or up to a maximum of three days once the application and documents are approved

Says a residence visa is optional for opening and operating the company, typically only needed if you intend to live in the UAE

RAKEZ

The entire application can be completed online

A valid passport, plus a visa or Emirates ID only from UAE residents

Says "there is no need for physical visits" to apply for its licence

Other Free Zones Set Their Own Rules

These four are the free zones whose remote routes this guide sets out. Every other free zone authority publishes its own process, so confirm with yours how it takes applications, checks identity and collects signatures before you plan around a remote setup. If you have not chosen yet, compare UAE free zones first, because the zone decides which process applies.

How a DMCC Setup Runs From Abroad, Step by Step

DMCC sets out its remote process stage by stage in its Company Formation Application Guideline for a new company set up by individuals (Version 5, updated 11 January 2024). It is one authority's published process, and IFZA, Meydan Free Zone and RAKEZ run their own, so read it as a worked example rather than a rule for every zone.

The Six Stages in DMCC's January 2024 Guideline

  1. Pre-approval: you apply with copies of your documents only, your assigned Business Setup Executive (BSE) gets in touch within 12 working hours about anything missing, and pre-approval can take 5 to 7 working days and stays valid for 60 days from issuance.

  2. Identity check and signing: the BSE verifies every authorised signatory by video call against their passport, with the original passport shown on the call, and sends the company documents, including the articles of association and specimen signature forms, to every signatory through DocuSign; the shareholders' resolution is signed through DocuSign, or notarised and attested by the UAE embassy or a consulate in the country of origin, or by any Arab embassy where no UAE mission is available.

  3. Registration: this can take 2 to 3 working days and ends with a provisional approval letter, an introduction bank letter and the articles of association, and the provisional approval and the bank letter are each valid for 90 days.

  4. Licence: a company on a flexi desk with no third-party approval and share capital of less than AED 500,000 goes straight to licence issuance, otherwise licensing can take 2 to 3 working days, and DMCC then issues the electronic licence, share certificates, certificate of registration and articles of association on the company portal.

  5. Visa application: a company on a flexi desk or in a serviced office may then apply for the employment visa online, though the medical test and fingerprints that follow need you in the UAE.

  6. Share capital proof: within 6 months of licence issuance, a company whose share capital is below AED 500,000 uploads a bank share capital deposit letter or a stamped bank statement showing the deposited amount.

Stage 2 is what replaces a visit for the licence, and stage 6 is why the bank account cannot wait indefinitely. Plan the bank meeting into the same trip as your visa steps.

What Needs You in the UAE

The residence visa is the part of the setup a founder abroad cannot finish remotely. Its medical test and Emirates ID fingerprints happen in person in the UAE, inside a time limit that starts when you enter, and a bank may also ask you to come in and sign.

Four Steps That Need You There

  1. The medical fitness test: the UAE Government portal says a residence visa requires applicants aged 18 and above to undergo a medical test to prove they are medically fit, and the Dubai Health Authority says the screening for a Dubai residence visa is done at designated Medical Fitness Centers and includes a blood test and a chest X-ray.

  2. Emirates ID fingerprints and signature: ICP requires everyone who has completed 15 years of age to complete the fingerprint and signature procedures at one of its service centres.

  3. The 60-day limit: ICP requires your stay not to exceed 60 days from the date of entry while the residence procedures are completed, with overstay fines if the permit is not finalised in that period, so arrive when the company is ready to sponsor you.

  4. The bank signature: RAKEZ's business bank account page says a founder outside the UAE can start online and must join a telephone or video call with the bank representative, but once approved has to visit the bank to sign the required documents; this is RAKEZ's description of a bank service, not a banking rule, and the bank decides.

How Long to Plan the Trip For

No authority publishes a total time in the UAE for the visa stage. ICP lists a service completion duration of 2 days for issuing a residence permit and 5 days for a new identity card, which is then delivered by courier, but your own medical, fingerprint and bank appointments set the length of the stay. Book them for as soon as you arrive, and keep the 60-day limit in view.

Owning a Free Zone Company Without a UAE Residence Visa

Meydan Free Zone says it is possible to open and operate a UAE free zone company without applying for a residency visa, and that a residency visa is optional and typically only required if the founder intends to live in the UAE. (Source: Meydan Free Zone) Check the position with your own free zone, since each sets its own rules.

What Changes Without a Residence Visa

The trade-off is paperwork that expects residency. RAKEZ's bank account page lists the Emirates ID and residence visa copy of the primary signatory among the documents a bank may ask for, while DMCC's guideline asks for a UAE residence visa and Emirates ID at application only if they apply to you. (Sources: RAKEZ bank account service; DMCC Company Formation Application Guideline) If you intend to live in the UAE, see how a residence visa through your company works, and treat the visa as a separate application that the authorities decide.

Opening the Company Bank Account From Abroad

Free zone pages describe starting the company bank account from abroad, but the bank decides whether to open it, and a visit to sign may still be part of the process. Here is what three of the free zones say about their own services.

What DMCC, RAKEZ and Meydan Free Zone Describe

DMCC asks you to choose the bank you intend to open an account with when you apply, and the introduction bank letter it issues at registration is valid for 90 days. (Source: DMCC Company Formation Application Guideline)

RAKEZ's business bank account service page says that a founder outside the UAE can start the application online, will join a telephone or video call with the bank representative, and once approved has to visit the bank to sign the required documents. It lists documents a bank may ask for, including certified company incorporation documents, a company profile, passport copies and CVs of all shareholders, six months of personal bank statements of all shareholders, and the primary signatory's Emirates ID and residence visa copy. (Source: RAKEZ bank account service)

Meydan Free Zone says founders can apply for a corporate bank account online through its banking partners, with KYC verification, compliance checks and document submission done digitally and verification that may include a video identity check, and that onboarding may take additional time depending on the bank's compliance review. (Source: Meydan Free Zone)

Each of these is a free zone's description of its own service, not a banking rule.

Book the Bank Into Your Visa Trip

Because the bank makes its own decision and may ask the signatory to sign in person, plan the bank meeting for the same trip as your medical test and fingerprints, and bring the documents listed above. For how banks approach free zone companies, see our guide to opening a free zone company bank account, and for the general process, how to open a business bank account in the UAE.

Documents to Prepare Before You Apply

A remote setup runs on the copies you upload, so prepare them before you apply. The lists below come from IFZA's, DMCC's and RAKEZ's own requirements, and your free zone may ask for more or less.

Individual Founders

  1. A passport with at least 6 months of validity, which IFZA advises.

  2. Proof of address: IFZA asks for a bank statement or utility bill dated within 3 months, and DMCC accepts a valid signed tenancy contract, or a utility bill, bank confirmation letter or official document from your country of residence not older than 6 months.

  3. A digital passport photo and the free zone's own forms, such as IFZA's application form with UBO information.

  4. An Emirates ID and visa copy only if you are already a UAE resident, which IFZA, DMCC and RAKEZ each ask for on that condition.

  5. An attested power of attorney copy, only if someone will sign for you: DMCC requires one when a shareholder, director, manager or secretary grants signing powers to others.

If someone in the UAE will act for you, such as a PRO, confirm with your free zone which documents they will sign and whether it needs a power of attorney for that.

Company Shareholders

When a company holds the shares, IFZA asks for a board resolution, the memorandum and articles of association (or equivalent), a valid trade licence (or equivalent), the certificate of incorporation or formation, and passport copies of every shareholder and the general manager of that corporate shareholder. IFZA advises starting attestation early because it can take 2 to 3 weeks. (Source: IFZA) For the steps, see our guide to attesting documents issued abroad.

What You Can Keep Doing From Abroad After the Licence

Corporate Tax registration is an online step. The Federal Tax Authority says registration is available 24/7 through its EmaraTax digital platform, and a company incorporated in the UAE on or after 1 March 2024 must apply to register for Corporate Tax within three months of incorporation. (Source: Federal Tax Authority) The other deadlines that start once the company exists are set out in the timeline guide linked at the top of this page.

If You Need a Mainland Company Instead

A mainland business can be established online through the Basher platform, but UAE-based law firms, courts and the notary public prepare and attest the Memorandum of Association, so part of the mainland route runs through offices in the UAE. (Source: UAE Government portal) For that route, see our guide to setting up a Dubai mainland company.

Mistakes That Stall a Remote Setup

Each of these mistakes costs time in a remote setup, and each has a simple fix.

Five Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

  1. Assuming an online licence means an online visa. The residence visa needs your medical test from age 18 and your Emirates ID fingerprints from age 15 in the UAE, so plan a trip from the start.

  2. Arriving long before the company can sponsor you. ICP limits your stay after entry to 60 days for completing the residence procedures, so travel once the licence is issued and the visa application can start.

  3. Leaving the bank until last. At DMCC, a company with share capital below AED 500,000 must upload a bank deposit letter or stamped bank statement within 6 months of licence issuance, so start the account once the introduction bank letter is issued.

  4. Sending corporate documents that were not attested or notarised correctly. IFZA names this as a common cause of delay, so check each one against your free zone's list before you upload it.

  5. Applying with a passport close to expiry. IFZA advises at least 6 months of validity, so renew first if yours has less.

A remote free zone setup comes down to two parts: the licence, which you can finish from where you are, and a trip to the UAE for the visa medical, the Emirates ID fingerprints and the bank signature. Frequently Asked Questions

You can finish the licence stage from abroad at several free zones. IFZA says the application process for remote company formation is 100% digital, RAKEZ says there is no need for physical visits to apply, Meydan Free Zone issues its licence digitally, and DMCC verifies signatories by video call and has documents e-signed through DocuSign. The residence visa still needs you in the UAE for the medical test and the Emirates ID fingerprints.

Meydan Free Zone says no: it is possible to open and operate a UAE free zone company without applying for a residency visa, which is typically only required if the founder intends to live in the UAE. Without one, expect some paperwork to assume residency, since RAKEZ lists the primary signatory's Emirates ID and residence visa copy among the documents a bank may ask for. Confirm the position with your own free zone.

No. ICP requires everyone who has completed 15 years of age to complete the fingerprint and signature procedures at one of its service centres, and the UAE Government portal says residence visa applicants apply for the Emirates ID card. ICP lists 5 days to complete a new identity card, which is then delivered by courier.

RAKEZ and Meydan Free Zone describe starting one from abroad, but plan for a visit. RAKEZ's bank account page says a founder outside the UAE can begin online and join a telephone or video call, but once approved has to visit the bank to sign, and Meydan Free Zone says its partner banks take applications and KYC online, with onboarding that may take additional time for compliance review. The bank decides whether to open the account.

No authority publishes a total. ICP lists 2 days to complete a residence permit and 5 days for a new identity card, and requires your stay not to exceed 60 days from the date of entry while the residence procedures are completed. Your medical test, fingerprint and bank appointments set the real length of the trip, so book them for as soon as you arrive.

At DMCC, yes, with an attested power of attorney: DMCC requires an attested copy when a shareholder, director, manager or secretary grants signing powers to someone else. If you sign yourself, DMCC verifies you by video call against your passport and sends the documents for e-signing through DocuSign, so you can sign from abroad.
